Avison Young appointed to Bristol's YTL Arena design team
08 May 2019Avison Young has been appointed to the YTL Arena design team. Avison Young will be advising and supporting YTL Arena through the planning process, delivering an arena for Bristol by repurposing the Brabazon hangars at the former Filton Airfield in the city.
YTL Arena has undergone a rigorous selection process over several months, now confirming the team to drive forward its plans to create a new arena to put Bristol on the world stage.
Alongside Avison Young on the design team are Grimshaw architects, in partnership with Manica Architecture, landscape architects Grant Associates, as well as structural and technical engineers, and specialist consultants.
YTL Arena Bristol Managing Director, Andrew Billingham, said: "We are very excited to announce our design team. This represents a very positive step forward for us. We are now working up our firm proposals to repurpose the Brabazon hangars to create a visionary arena that will put Bristol on the world stage."
Jo Davis, Managing Director Planning, Development and Regeneration at Avison Young, said, "The YTL vision for the Brabazon hangar site will benefit the whole of Bristol with its imaginative placemaking and economic development. Bristol remains the only core city without a major arena and as part of the wider regeneration of the area, this scheme can be a game-changer.
"Managing urban change is Avison Young’s USP and we’re delighted to be part of the design team, leading on Planning, for this massively exciting arena scheme."
YTL Arena will not be working in isolation: partnerships with other businesses are an essential part of its business strategy – bringing the individual, urban character of the city into the venue. The arena will also form part of a wider transformation of the former Filton airfield. Called Brabazon, the airfield will become a thriving new neighbourhood for Bristol neighbourhood with more than 2,600 homes, creative workplaces and a vibrant town centre set amongst landscaped public squares and parkland.
The arena project team aims to submit a full planning application in the coming months.
