Bristol Old Vic
- Location: Bristol, UK
Bristol Old Vic is a Grade I listed Georgian theatre, which opened in 1766. It is the oldest working theatre in England in continuous operation.
Following over six years of dedication, design, procurement and construction phases this project transformed the public journey and circulation spaces through-out, greatly improving access and for the first time providing the public with backdrop views of the original auditorium theatre wall.
The demolition of a 1970’s extension provided the opportunity for a new façade, entrance, bars & kitchens, all providing much needed high-quality public spaces. The adjoining Coopers’ Hall building was repurposed, with the lower internal section demolished to provide a new 330 seat studio space.
A public hire hall/banqueting space was also provided, alongside a refurbished rehearsal space in the loft. New work spaces were also provided for theatre staff. The theatre remained open for performances during the construction phase.
Avison Young provided Project Management and Employer’s Agent services, and assisted with the procurement of a consultant team under OJEU procedures, advising on different procurement routes and contracts.
This was a highly successful project winning numerous regional and national awards, including:
- RIBA National Award 2019
- RIBA South West Award 2019
- RICS Project of the Year (South West) 2019
- RICS Conservation Project of the Year (South West) 2019
