Doing things differently: A new approach to shaping future talent in property

14 January 2025

The property industry is undergoing significant change, reshaping the traditional pathways into the field. At Avison Young, we recognise that there is value in expanding our horizons when recruiting, and by offering diverse and accessible pathways into the business that challenge outdated norms. By focusing on apprenticeships and graduate schemes, we are empowering young professionals, who traditionally may not have considered the industry, to shape the future of property.

As Paul Broad, Managing Director at Avison Young Glasgow, states: “We believe the strength of our business lies in our people. That’s why we’re committed to creating opportunities for creative thinkers and innovators. Everyone has a talent, it just a matter of helping nurture and support them every step of the way so they can achieve their potential.”

The property industry has long been associated with conventional entry points such as university degrees and established qualifications. However, the landscape is changing, and Avison Young is proud to be at the front of this transformation.

We’ve redefined recruitment by opening the door to individuals from all walks of life. Through initiatives like apprenticeship programmes, flexible graduate schemes, and vocational training, we’re making the sector more inclusive and accessible.

Take Mark McCabe, for example. After discovering Avison Young through open days at school, he was inspired by the apprenticeship programme. Reflecting on his journey, Mark says: “Avison Young continues to support my learning through mentorship and in-house training resources like AY Learn. They even give me dedicated time to focus on my studies, ensuring I don’t fall behind my peers.”

Our commitment to diverse pathways

At Avison Young, we pride ourselves on doing things differently. From partnerships with educational institutions to mentorship programs, we’re creating avenues for young professionals to thrive.

Inclusivity lies at the heart of our approach. By actively encouraging applications from underrepresented groups and individuals without traditional qualifications, we’re broadening the talent pool and driving innovation.

For Ailsa Lamont, who joined Avison Young after leaving university to explore other opportunities, the apprenticeship offered a lifeline. She shares: “The apprenticeship programme has given me a massive head start over full-time university students. I’ve been able to learn and gain experience simultaneously, which has been invaluable.”

Emma Morton, who before joining Avison Young worked in the hospitality industry, said of her experience: “Avison Young has been excellent at supporting me through my development, providing lots of training and opportunities to attend events, to network with other apprentices from across the UK.”

Real Stories: Apprentice and graduate experiences

Our apprentices and graduates bring their unique stories to Avison Young, each demonstrating the power of diverse pathways.

Mark McCabe transitioned from studying quantity surveying to an apprenticeship at Avison Young, where mentorship helped him build confidence and communication skills. He highlights: “The most valuable thing I’ve learned is how crucial communication is when working on collaborative projects.”

Ailsa Lamont also praises the balance between academic and professional development: “Avison Young provides dedicated time for my university work and ensures I have the support I need to succeed.”

Kara Gillespie, who joined straight from high school, reflects on her first year: “The exposure to the property industry, networking opportunities, and support from my team have been incredible. I feel fortunate to have this experience so early in my career.”

Eilidh MacPherson, who completed work experience with Avison Young during her time at university, added. “I gained valuable insights and practical skills in the industry. This experience motivated me to continue working part-time with the company during my fourth year of studies. The opportunity allowed me to deepen my knowledge of the industry. Upon graduating, I was thrilled to join the graduate scheme this year, where I am excited to build on my experiences in the property sector.”

Investing in the leaders of tomorrow

The property sector is undergoing a significant shift, and Avison Young is proud to lead the charge. By reimagining recruitment, we’re setting a new standard for accessibility and inclusivity in the industry.

Looking ahead, we’re committed to expanding our programmes, forming new partnerships, and continuing to champion diverse pathways into the property sector. As Stewart Taylor, Managing Director at Avison Young, Edinburgh puts it: “Our goal is to create a workforce that reflects the communities we serve. As the saying goes, if you ask the same questions, don’t be surprised to get the same answers. We want to ask different questions!

“At Avison Young, we’re not just building a better property industry - we’re building better futures. By offering apprenticeships, graduate schemes, and mentorship programmes, we’re giving young professionals the tools to thrive.”

If you’re considering a career in property, there’s no better time to join us. As our apprentice, Mark McCabe, advises: “If you’re driven by success and willing to put in the effort, an apprenticeship with Avison Young is the best way to get a head start in your career.”
